Ticket To The Tents: Day 5 Spring 2015 NYFW Trend Report

Featuring Lela Rose, Carolina Herrera, Dennis Basso, Reem Acra, Libertine & Oudifu

The FashionMingle.net team wrapped up Day 5 late covering the last shows of the day; Libertine & Oudifu.  Oudifu is considered an emerging label to the U.S., but is very popular in China!  In addition to bringing in designers from around the world to showcase their collections at MBFW, IMG has done a major push to feature international emerging and up and coming designers.  Grant it, this may be due to the fact that heavy-hitter names, such as DVF, Michael Kors, and more, have been pulling out of MBFW over the last few seasons to showcase offsite. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Young, emerging & up and coming designers have embraced the new culture of fashion, and with these gaps in the time slot of MBFW, they now have an opportunity to bring their designs to the masses.  Designers such as Libertine, Oudifu, Vivienne Hu, Mark & Estel, Falguni & Shane Peacock are just a few brands that have now become MBFW household names.

COLOR

The real first emergence of black and white combinations showed up on Day 5 of New York Fashion Week, starting with Lela Rose’s runway for spring. Lela Rose featured bold gingham and polka dot prints in black and white.  Carolina Herrera favored the color red in her collection, infusing single, and ginormous red flowers on white fabric.  The popular all white ensembles also showed up in CH’s runway, and like Victoria Beckham the day before her, Carolina Herrera featured a dark hue of purple, which is unexpected for Spring!

FABRIC

Dennis Basso opened his collection with a dedication to the late Joan Rivers. All of us at FashionMingle.net and our media partners send our condolences to Joan’s friends and family.  In typical, Basso style, his collection featured fur! Surprisingly there wasn’t as much fur as some of his previous collections, but there was fur nonetheless.  Reem Acra has the best name in the world for a fashion designer! Her name makes me think of fabric! Reem created looks that featured tons of sparkle and shine. The audience collectively let out ooohs and aahhs as the amazing gowns just kept coming.

UNIQUE FIND: Johnson Harting’s Libertine

Johnson is the designer behind the label Libertine. Every season I discover new brands…well at least they are new to me.  This was my first time seeing Libertine clothes and I had no idea what was in store! As soon as the lights went down, I knew I was in for a treat.  The models came storming out one after the other, to upbeat, pop culture tunes, while wearing the wildest street wear looks imaginable. Wild but functional and fun.  There were tons of colors, fabrics, and 3D enhancements on the clothes.  To finish the show, Johnson led his models around the room in true party walk style. The audience, who simply loved the collection, cheered and clapped for the final walk.  Johnson’s clothes may not be for everybody…especially the faint at heart, but watching the show and viewing his creativity is definitely exciting!

Shop Isabelle Donola Straight Off the NYFW Runway!

When does the love of fashion begin? For Brazil-born designer Isabelle Donola, that love started when she learned to stitch at the age of three, making Barbie clothes by the time she was six. This early passion sparked a career in fashion for Donola who has been a participant on Project Runway and is showing at this year’s New York Fashion Week.

Photo-kerry-3 small

Growing up, Donola’s creative and imaginative eye allowed her to draw inspiration from many different art forms, ranging form cloths and textiles to metals and recycled materials. For her most recent collection, Donola was inspired by abstract shapes, well-fitted garments and oversized structural pieces.

Even after exploring various other hobbies and career opportunities, including journalism and ballet, Donola knew from a young age she was destined for the world of fashion design. With such a deep passion for every step in the design process, fashion design is more than just a job or interest, for Donola it is a necessity.

Donola was featured as a designer on popular T.V. show Project Runway on the “Under the Gunn” season and has shown at various New York and Los Angeles Fashion Week events. Donola currently has a successful fashion line “ Isabelle Donola NYC”.

F-W 13-14 campaign-1

Isabelle will be showing her new collection this Monday at New York Fashion Week. She describes the collection as:

“Nude. That was the first word that came to mind when I thought about this collection. The reflection of human nature and how people so often wear a mask. So I created a collection to evoke the naked beauty of the human being, raw in its essence and beautiful just as it is. I want people to embrace their inner beauty and extend that to their second skin. Allowing the garments to fearlessly speak to the world about who they are.”

We are very excited to have Isabelle Donola as our debut designer at New York Fashion Week. You can take a look and shop her collection live from the runway starting Monday September 8th at 4:00 p.m. EST here.

NYFW Day 7 Trend Report

NYFW Day 7 Trend Report

(Featuring Michael Kors, Marchesa, Kaufman Franco, Anna Sui, Zang Toi, Proenza Schouler, Jenny Packham, Jason Wu for Hugo Boss, & Betsey Johnson)

Day 7 of New York Fashion Week saw collections from some heavy-hitters in the Fashion Industry: Michael Kors, Marchesa, Anna Sui, Betsey Johnson, Kaufman Franco, Jenny Packham and Proenza Schouler.  Reed Krakoff presented his first collection since leaving Coach as their Creative Director and Jason Wu debuted his first collection for Hugo Boss.  Hugo Boss has not shown at New York Fashion Week in 20 years! To wrap up the day 7 collections, Zang Toi presented another stunning collection using a breathtaking shade of green that stole the show.

THE TRENDS

COLOUR

Anna Sui’s collection had a focus on dark shades of red, green and blue. Zang Toi had a striking shade of green to highlight his grey & black color palette.  Reed Krakoff has mostly neutrals with a few looks in a beautiful shade of blue. Jenny Packham featured warm colors yellow, orange, pink and red and a few all black pieces.

PRINT

Everyone knows that Anna Sui is a fan of print. She did not disappoint with her vision for Fall. Her retro prints transporting us back to the 70s flower child. They were fun and at times a little overwhelming, but that’s to be expected from Anna Sui.

FABRIC

Kaufman Franco’s use of shiny and sparkly fabrics was perfect for his gowns.  Jenny Packham also favored shiny fabrics and sequins for her skirts, dresses, pants and sweatshirts.  Michael Kors featured sheer fabrics, while Reed Krakoff had fun with fabric blocking.

STYLE, FIT & SILHOUETTES

Michael Kors sent a very bohemian collection down the runway.  It might make you think of swashbuckler pirates, but in a cool, feminine way!  Boxy, thigh-length sweaters, and wide leg pants were also popular for Michael Kors. Designers have moved away from the skinny leg featuring loose fitting palazzo or wide leg silhouettes. Anna Sui had layers upon layers for her collection allowing for a lot outfit combinations.  The cape returns in full force for Day 7. It’s apparent that having a cape for the Fall will be a must.  Zang Toi had more than a few fabulous gowns with capes.  While others focused on capes, the ladies at Marchesa focused on a more Grecian-inspired silhouette. Their collection was romantic and ethereal and their draped garments might remind you of Grecian togas. There were some funky silhouettes as presented by Proenza Schouler. They must have collaborated with Thom Browne on the exaggerated puffy sleeve!  Jenny Packham presented a dressy casual collection with comfortable, satin wide-leg pants & voluminous skirts paired with embellished sweatshirts.

DAY 6 NYFW Trend Report

DAY 6 NYFW Trend Report

(Featuring Pamella Roland, Rodarte, Vera Wang, Naeem Khan, Oscar De La Renta, & Sophie Theallet)

Well folks, we are winding down! There’s only 2 days left of New York Fashion Week! I don’t know about you, but this makes me quite sad! However, I’m sure our media team will be happy for the crazy, busy week to be over!  In my opinion the designers on Day 6 brought out the big guns, with a ton of show stopping collections.  Vera Wang showed that bugs aren’t creepy, but beautiful.  Pamella Roland presented a very diverse runway collection, while Rodarte taught us that Sci-fi and Fashion DO go together.  Let’s take a look back at the trends seen on the runway for Day 6.

THE TRENDS

COLOUR

The colors remained fairly dark in nature except for the ladies behind the label Rodarte who presented a very pastel collection.  Pamella Roland featured dark blues, black, mauves & burgundy.  Vera Wang presented a completely black and blue collection with no pop of color unless you count the red hair of one of her models.  Naeem Khan featured browns, gold, reds, & tans with a few black and whites mixed in.

FABRICS

A lot of sheer! For the most part, people assume they have to wear heavier fabrics in the winter time, but a sheer garment underneath a statement overcoat will definitely keep you warm from point A to B.  Pamella Roland used a lot of shiny fabrics that made me think of satin and lame and displayed some amazing beadwork.

PRINTS

There are many types of checkered prints from gingham to plaid, and even plaid comes in different designs from tartan to madras, and Vera Wang favored all types of plaid in her collection! Plaid is typically associated with menswear along with argyle and she also had a few argyle pieces.  Pamella Roland also favored plaid for a few of her looks.  Naeem Khan took a walk on the wild side featuring exotic animal prints. Rodarte pleased more than just the fashion crowd with their use of Star Wars images for their final dresses.  Star Wars fans everywhere will adore those pieces.  Oscar De La Renta featured prints in the brocade/baroque/damask patterns for his collection.

STYLE & FIT

Vera Wang featured loose fitting garments also adding opera gloves and fur vests to her ensembles. Pamella Roland stayed with more classic & feminine silhouette, while Sophie Theallet presented a collection of mostly shorter, cocktail length dresses.

MAKEUP & HAIR

The dark lip remains a designer favorite, especially for Rodarte and Naeem Khan.  Rodarte also featured a burgundy smokey eye on their models. Pamella Roland brought back old Hollywood glam with a side part and cascading waves.
